Iodine has been used as a wound antiseptic for centuries. It is an exceptionally effective antimicrobial agent that kills all germs, including bacteria, viruses and fungi. However, in its natural form, it can also cause unwanted effects.

In the 1950s, researchers discovered that by combining natural iodine with a polymer, called povidone or PVP, the iodine could be used safely on the skin. The new compound was called povidone-iodine or simply PVP-I. Since then and for more than 6 decades, PVP-I solutions have been widely used in hospitals as antiseptics to prevent and treat infection during and after surgery.

Recently, it was discovered that at low concentrations (about 1/10th of the concentration used in hospital antiseptics), PVP-I can be used safely in the nose and throat without compromising its rapid germ-killing properties. It is this discovery that inspired the development of Nasodine® Nasal Spray and Nasodine Throat Spray.

Nasodine Nasal Spray is a povidone-iodine nasal spray for use whenever you feel concerned about germs that cause nasal infections. You should consider using Nasodine Nasal Spray whenever you are concerned about an infection in the nasal passages. This could be after exposure to crowds while commuting, traveling on holidays, at public gatherings, and at work.

Nasodine Throat Spray is a convenient easy-to-use povidone-iodine spray for use whenever you have signs of a sore throat. Nasodine Nasal Spray and Throat Spray together are the perfect companions for your medicine cabinet, at work and whenever you travel.

Nasodine was developed by Firebrick Pharma Ltd, an Australian biopharmaceutical company founded in 2012 with the mission to create innovative products based on PVP-I (povidone-iodine).

Nasodine Nasal Spray is backed by more than 10 years of R&D, including multiple clinical trials, and peer-reviewed published studies that confirm its safety and effectiveness.

Nasodine Throat Spray is a new addition to the Nasodine range and provides the ideal and convenient companion to the nasal spray, to target germs in the throat that can cause sore throats.

Nasodine Nasal Spray and Nasodine Throat Spray are both manufactured in Australia under pharmaceutical GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) conditions, ensuring that they meet the highest quality standards for pharmaceutical products.

"Nasodine" is a registered international trademark owned by Firebrick Pharma and the product is protected by multiple international patents.

You can use Nasodine Nasal Spray up to 4 times daily, applying 3-4 sprays per nostril at each use:

1. Blow your nose before use
2. Holding your head upright, gently insert the nozzle into one nostril, while holding the other nostril closed with a finger. Make sure the nozzle is pointed towards the back of your head.
3. Depress the pump firmly while inhaling at the same time.
4. Repeat for a total of 3 or 4 sprays per nostril.
5. Replace the protective cap after use. Do not share the bottle with other people.

Nasodine will not make you drowsy or affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. You may find that it occasionally causes some nasal irritation after use, but this is usually mild and disappears quickly. However, if you experience persistent or severe nasal irritation after use, then stop using Nasodine.

Nasodine Nasal Spray can be used by teenagers (12 and older), as well as adults. It is not currently recommended for use by children under 12.

When used properly (inhaling when you depress the spray pump), the solution is delivered deeply into the nasal passages and none should leak out of the nose. If any does, wipe away the excess with a tissue.

Nasodine solution is water soluble and generally non-staining to skin and natural fabrics, so if any does get on your clothes, we recommend you rinse it with water.

This is normal. If your nasal tissue contains starch (many do), the iodine in the Nasodine solution reacts with the starch to turn the tissues a dark blue colour.

There is enough solution in each 25 mL bottle for around 7 days of treatment when used as recommended: 3-4 sprays per nostril, 4 times daily. Nasodine Nasal Spray has a 3-year shelf life at time of manufacture (check the ‘use by’ date on the bottle). The product can be used at any time up to the expiry date on the bottle.

No it should not be refrigerated. It should be stored at room temperature (store below 30°C).

Nasodine Throat Spray is an antiseptic (germ-killing) throat spray for the protection and relief of sore throats.

Apply 2-4 sprays into the back of the throat as needed, up to 4 times daily

Yes, where you have nasal symptoms in conjunction with a sore throat.

Do not use it if you are allergic to povidone-iodine, or if you experience any allergic symptoms after using the product.

Consult a healthcare professional before use if you have a thyroid problem, are pregnant, or breast feeding, or undergoing a radio-iodine treatment.

Current research indicates that iodine allergy is not a problem and that allergies associated with shellfish (for example) are attributable to shellfish proteins rather than iodine. Iodine is an essential nutrient needed for thyroid function, and it is actively absorbed and stored by the human body.

Although very rare, allergic reactions can occur to PVP (the polymer component of PVP-I) and if you experience any symptoms such as swelling, rash, shortness of breath or other allergic symptoms, stop using the nasal spray and contact a doctor immediately.

The Nasodine formulation releases iodine, which can be absorbed into the body. This is generally not a problem, because iodine is an essential nutrient needed for proper thyroid function. The amount of iodine absorbed from the recommended use of Nasodine Nasal Spray is not clinically significant and in clinical studies, it had no effect on thyroid function based on short-term use. However, in people with a thyroid condition, long-term exposure to excess iodine may be a concern. So if you do have a thyroid condition, it is recommended that you consult your doctor before using Nasodine products.

The Nasodine formulation releases iodine, which can be absorbed into the body. Within limits this is fine, because iodine is an essential nutrient needed for thyroid function. In fact, more iodine is needed during pregnancy. However, you should consult your doctor if you have any concerns about using Nasodine.

There is no risk of addiction with Nasodine Nasal Spray. Addiction has been associated with decongestant nasal sprays; these sprays relieve congestion by shrinking the blood vessels in the nose, but over time you can become tolerant and need to use more to achieve the same effect. Nasodine does not have this problem.
